​Shamanism- the Essence

​​The essential vital energies of life, which is as a basic tool within shamanism, is always available and flows perpetually between, about, through, and with everything. All of the ancient, traditional, and indigenous healing systems in the world recognize and utilize this vital energy; what I call an experience of the original flow of life, as a core to their methods. In India it is called "Prana." In China it is called "Chi." In Japan and Korea it is called "Ki." Among the !Kung bush-men it is called "Boiling Energy." The Kahuna of Hawaii and Polynesia call it "Mana." Christians called it a reflection of the Holy Ghost, and worshiped its manifestations as tongues of flames over the heads of apostles during the Pentecost reunion. Moses witnessed it as the burning bush. In ancient Sanskrit it is known as "Shakti"; its form being "Kundalini", which translates as coiled up. Kundalini rests at the base of the spine in a triangular bone called the Sacrum. Ancient Greeks knew the value of this because it's the last bone that incinerates when a body is burned. Also, Mercury’s serpent symbol is an alchemical symbol for the process of psychic metamorphosis. The Hippocratic symbol of two coiled snakes or serpents entwined around a staff represents the kundalini or vital energy which rises along the central subtle channel in a spiral double helical movement.  The Chinese, Japanese and Koreans study this movement with practices using meridians. This vital energy is also symbolized in the West by Aquarius and the Holy Grail, container of the water of life. It's said to nourish the Tree of Life (or archetypally the Axis Mundi) within all of us. In Buddhism it is the "middle path" (like Aristotle's The Golden Mean) to achieve nirvana, or really the central channel (sushumna) through which the Kundalinii ascends.

In essence, Shamanism belongs to no one and everyone-- EVERYTHING to be more precise. It expressly has no beginning and no end. It is as a language that freely flows from within to without; where everything has a resonant voice that answers to calls of healing, well-being and transformation.
